I'm able from my win8 pc to see and access files on my xp comps, and can see and access files in the win8 public and default users folders from my xp pc.

But, I'm trying to share a folder i created on the C root drive called "mydata". I've completely disabled the uac in the registry; i've set sharing for the mydata folder directly as sharing the root drive fails with error messages ; all the comps have the same workgroup name; even though the uac is disabled and i am logged on as hidden administrator i still get the error message " blahblahwin8 is not accessible.

You might not have permission to use this network blahblah Access is denied ". It must be something about permissions as i can access win8 user data files, but why not this folder which is only data too? I can't think how to give more permissions than i have. Any ideas - i've spent most of every day for the past two weeks trying to get my new win8 pc to work as i want it, so i can get reliable file sharing.

I don't want to change the name or location of the mydata folder as it suits me for data backup and consolidation. PS I should have said i'm trying to get this over a 'private' wifi network, home workgroup called - "WORKGROUP", i've disabled password protected sharing for private, guest or public, all networks, I have enabled file sharing for devices that use 40 or 56 bit encryption, and I've turned ON sharing for public folders.
